Building history

In its current form, this large gabled house was built at the end of the 16th century.
The date 1567 on the door of the staircase turret bears witness to its contemporaneity with the Ziegler house in Sélestat.

Built on the former estate of the Waffler d'Eschery family, acquired by the town at the end of the 14th century, it adjoined the old town hall and its garden.
The first known owner was a certain Gaspard Wimpf, while in 1557 it belonged to a man called ‘Rotenbourg’, a cloth shearer, one of whose daughters was condemned to the stake for witchcraft in 1570.

The oriel

The facade is decorated with a projecting two-sided oriel window surmounted by a coat of arms that is now illegible. Its architecture is exceptional in Sélestat, and one might be tempted to speak more of a watchtower.
